Imara means power, persistence and endurance in Swahili. This language is one of the more recognizable and widely used, African languages within the African Diaspora, and very befitting for the movement we are creating. We’ve chosen to launch an empowering experience for black women, in the form of a retreat, and named the retreat Imara, because it represents everything the experience stands for.
Especially for people of color in all fields, and realms of society. In this case, the conversation is specifically centered around art & empowerment.
Together, we aim to increase awareness within the black community at large, by creating a unique experience, specifically tied to the art world; as well as continuing to build upon black excellence, by sharing empowering tools and information with others. It is our hope that this will leads to greater awareness, and inclusion, not only in business, but in creative realms as well.
IMARA is a mindful movement, directly born from the disconnection between art created by black artists, and black audiences. Specifically due to the art world traditionally being Eurocentric and hierarchal. We believe that art as a whole, is a tool for empowerment and conduit for change; it expands our horizons and enriches the human experience, as well as our understanding of the world around us. It truly enhances our lives in unimaginable ways and also connects us on a universal level. Therefore the audience should be more reflective of this type of inclusion and connectivity.
IMARA aims to bridge the gap, between black artists and the black audience. By creating awareness on an everyday level, using special connections within the black community and correlating these in an artistic way, within an empowering environment; via an exclusive, thoughtfully curated experience. Specifically for women of color, who tend to be the trendsetters within their communities. This is an experience like no other… FOR US, BY US.
